The Titleist Vokey Design SM9 Wedge is a premium scoring club created to deliver the three qualities at the heart of Bob Vokey's wedge philosophy: shot versatility, precise distance and trajectory control, and exceptional spin. Combining progressive centre-of-gravity positioning with Spin Milled grooves and an extensive selection of specialised sole grinds, the SM9 allows golfers to build a short-game setup suited to their individual swing and playing conditions.
A key advancement within the SM9 generation is its progressive forward centre of gravity, engineered differently throughout the loft range. By positioning the CG higher and further forward as loft increases, Titleist created a wedge capable of producing a more controlled, penetrating trajectory while retaining the spin required to stop the ball quickly on the green.
Progressive Centre of Gravity
The SM9 features a carefully engineered progressive centre-of-gravity design that changes according to loft.
Rather than simply positioning the CG higher, Titleist moves it both upward and forward towards the face as loft increases.
This helps reduce excessive dynamic loft and unwanted ballooning, producing a flatter and more controlled trajectory while improving stability through impact.
The result is predictable distance and flight across full swings, three-quarter approaches and controlled scoring shots.
Controlled, Penetrating Ball Flight
Trajectory control is one of the defining characteristics of the Vokey SM9.
The forward CG positioning helps golfers produce a lower, more penetrating flight without sacrificing the spin required to stop the golf ball after landing.
For accomplished wedge players, this provides greater freedom to control trajectory in different conditions rather than relying on an excessively high flight to generate stopping power.
Spin Milled Groove Technology
Every SM9 face incorporates precisely manufactured Spin Milled grooves designed to maximise interaction between the clubface and golf ball.
The grooves are individually inspected during manufacturing to ensure they conform to Vokey's demanding tolerances.
Combined with the precisely textured face, this allows the SM9 to generate the friction required for exceptional spin and dependable control throughout the scoring game.
Loft-Specific Groove Design
Vokey does not use the same groove geometry throughout the entire SM9 range.
Lower-lofted wedges from 46° through 54° use narrower, deeper grooves designed around the higher-speed impacts typically produced on fuller approach shots.
Higher lofts from 56° through 62° utilise wider, shallower grooves designed to optimise performance on the lower-speed shots commonly played around the green.
This loft-specific approach ensures each wedge is engineered for the types of shots it is most likely to encounter.
Micro-Grooves for Additional Friction
Smaller micro-grooves are cut between the primary Spin Milled grooves to further increase face texture.
These additional edges become particularly useful on shorter pitches and partial shots where clubhead speed is reduced.
By creating additional friction between the face and ball, the micro-grooves help golfers produce the spin required to control launch, landing and release around the green.
Heat-Treated Groove Durability
High-spin wedge performance naturally places considerable demands on the edges of the grooves.
To maintain performance for longer, Titleist applies a proprietary localised heat treatment to the impact area of the SM9 face.
This process is designed to increase groove durability and extend effective groove life while retaining the responsive feel expected from a Vokey wedge.
Six Core Sole Grinds
One of the greatest strengths of the SM9 family is its extensive selection of specialised sole designs.
The six core options — F, S, M, D, K and L Grinds — provide different combinations of bounce, sole width and relief.
Rather than one sole being universally suitable, each grind is engineered around particular swing characteristics, playing conditions and shot-making preferences.
This allows golfers to select wedges that complement both their technique and the surfaces they regularly encounter.
F Grind – Traditional Full-Sole Performance
The F Grind is a traditional full sole designed primarily for square-faced shots and full swings.
Its stable sole geometry makes it an excellent choice in gap and pitching wedge lofts where the club is frequently used for full approaches.
It is particularly suitable for golfers seeking predictable turf interaction without requiring extensive manipulation of the clubface.
S Grind – Simple & Versatile
The S Grind provides a versatile mid-bounce configuration designed for golfers who generally prefer playing shots with a relatively square clubface.
Its sole geometry provides useful turf interaction without excessive relief, creating a straightforward setup suitable for a broad variety of approach and greenside situations.
M Grind – Maximum Shot-Making Versatility
The M Grind is one of Bob Vokey's most versatile sole designs.
Relief around the heel, toe and trailing edge allows the clubface to be opened or closed while maintaining effective interaction with the turf.
It is particularly well suited to creative golfers who vary face angle and setup according to the shot rather than relying on one standard technique around the green.
D Grind – High Bounce with Added Versatility
The D Grind combines substantial bounce with strategic sole relief.
This provides the forgiveness associated with a higher-bounce wedge while retaining the ability to manipulate the face for different trajectories.
It is particularly effective for golfers with steeper deliveries or those who regularly play in softer turf conditions but still want considerable greenside versatility.
K Grind – Maximum Bounce & Forgiveness
The K Grind features a wide, high-bounce sole designed to provide exceptional forgiveness through sand and softer turf.
Its substantial sole helps prevent the leading edge from digging excessively into the ground, making it particularly effective from bunkers and lush lies.
For golfers seeking maximum assistance from a high-lofted wedge, the K Grind provides one of the most forgiving configurations within the SM9 family.
L Grind – Low Bounce for Skilled Shot-Makers
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the L Grind provides a narrow, low-bounce sole designed for golfers with shallow deliveries and players who frequently encounter firm conditions.
Its minimal effective bounce allows skilled golfers to slide the leading edge beneath the ball from tight lies while offering considerable freedom to manipulate the face.
It is a specialist configuration intended for golfers who prioritise versatility and precise turf interaction.
Bob Vokey Design & Tour-Proven Shaping
Every SM9 benefits from decades of wedge development led by Bob Vokey, with considerable input from professional golfers and elite-level fitting.
The head shape provides the clean, traditional appearance expected from a specialist scoring wedge, while the progressive construction ensures performance characteristics are optimised throughout the loft range.
The result is a wedge family capable of being configured around virtually every area of the short game.
