The TaylorMade P770 Irons (2020) combine the compact appearance and precise control of a traditional players' iron with the speed, launch and forgiveness of modern hollow-body technology. Designed for accomplished golfers who prefer a shorter blade length, thin topline and minimal offset, the P770 delivers powerful performance without sacrificing the clean appearance associated with a tour-inspired iron.
Often considered the more compact sibling of the P790, the 2020 P770 uses a forged hollow-body construction, SpeedFoam injection, internal tungsten weighting, Progressive Inverted Cone Technology and a Thru-Slot Speed Pocket to conceal considerable performance technology within its refined chassis. The result is a genuine players' distance iron offering impressive ball speed alongside the spin, workability and feedback required for precise approach play.
Compact Players' Distance Design
The P770 was created for golfers who want additional speed and forgiveness without moving into an oversized distance-iron profile.
Compared with the P790, the P770 features a shorter blade length, thinner topline and reduced offset, creating a more compact and traditional appearance behind the golf ball.
Its shaping provides the visual precision preferred by accomplished players while hiding substantial performance technology inside the head.
Forged Hollow-Body Construction
The P770 uses a sophisticated hollow-body construction built around a soft 8620 carbon steel body and a thin forged 4140 steel face.
This allows TaylorMade to create a fast, flexible hitting surface while retaining the premium appearance and impact characteristics expected from a forged players' iron.
The hollow chassis also creates valuable internal space for SpeedFoam and strategically positioned tungsten weighting.
Forged 4140 Steel Face
A thin, wrap-around forged 4140 steel face provides the foundation for the P770's impressive ball-speed performance.
The high-strength material allows the face to be manufactured thinner than a conventional one-piece forged iron, increasing flexibility through impact.
This creates the additional speed associated with a players' distance iron while maintaining a compact head that looks significantly more traditional at address.
SpeedFoam Technology
TaylorMade injects the hollow internal cavity with its proprietary SpeedFoam material.
The lightweight urethane foam supports the thin face while simultaneously managing the vibrations and acoustics generated by a hollow construction.
This allows the face to retain its speed characteristics while producing a softer, more solid impact sensation, helping the P770 feel closer to a traditional players' iron than its internal construction might suggest.
Up to 46g of Tungsten Weighting
TaylorMade positions up to 46 grams of tungsten internally within the long and mid irons, allowing substantial mass to be concentrated low within the clubhead.
The dense tungsten helps lower the centre of gravity to promote easier launch while increasing stability through impact.
This is particularly valuable in the longer irons, where golfers require additional assistance generating sufficient launch and maintaining ball speed on less-than-perfect strikes.
Thru-Slot Speed Pocket
The 3 through 7 irons incorporate TaylorMade's proven Thru-Slot Speed Pocket within the sole.
The slot allows the lower section of the face to flex more efficiently at impact, helping preserve ball speed when contact occurs low on the clubface.
Low-face strikes are particularly common with longer irons, so the Speed Pocket provides forgiveness exactly where it can have the greatest effect on carry distance and launch.
Progressive Inverted Cone Technology
Each P770 face incorporates Progressive Inverted Cone Technology, with the geometry individually engineered according to the characteristics of each iron.
Rather than positioning the fastest section identically throughout the set, TaylorMade adjusts the face design according to common strike tendencies for each club.
This helps maintain speed across a wider hitting area while improving consistency and accuracy when contact moves away from the centre.
Traditional Players' Lofts
Unlike distance irons built predominantly around extremely strong lofts, the 2020 P770 maintains more traditional players' specifications.
The 7 iron is 33°, allowing the set to retain useful launch and spin rather than relying entirely on reduced loft to generate additional yardage.
This gives accomplished golfers the stopping power required to attack greens while still benefiting from the additional speed produced by the hollow-body construction.
Controlled Launch & Stopping Power
The P770 is designed to balance distance with the trajectory characteristics required from a precision iron.
Its internal tungsten weighting assists launch, while the more traditional loft structure generates sufficient spin to produce a controllable flight and hold greens.
This makes the P770 particularly attractive to golfers who want additional speed but do not want to sacrifice predictable carry distances or stopping power simply to maximise total yardage.
Workability & Shot Shaping
The compact dimensions and players-oriented geometry provide the P770 with excellent shot-making characteristics.
Golfers can vary trajectory, work the ball in either direction and control flight according to course conditions.
While the internal technology provides useful assistance on imperfect strikes, the P770 retains enough responsiveness to reward golfers who deliberately manipulate face delivery and trajectory.
Players' Feel with Hidden Forgiveness
The defining quality of the P770 is how effectively its technology is concealed within a traditional-looking iron.
From address, the club presents the compact profile expected from a players' model. Internally, however, SpeedFoam, tungsten weighting, a flexible forged face and Progressive ICT provide substantially more assistance than a conventional muscle-back blade.
This makes the P770 an excellent bridge between pure players' irons and larger, more distance-orientated designs.
